Natural disasters always cause us to reflect on mortality and the frailty of life - despite how big and powerful we might feel as a person compared to mother earth we're nothing.

The latest news of massive flash flooding in Portugal had me once again reflecting, the second report mentioned it was on a Portuguese island, though they didn't name the island but that got me concerned, and finally last night watching the CBC news I caught that it was in fact on the Island of Madeira, home of one of our longest running clients Tony De'Nobrega.

Point2 Agent Websites - Design, Override default Font settings

Sometimes in designing sites we find that the base font setup on a Point2 site is inadequate, whether the font size is too small, wrong family etc. for the most part we can accommodate these changes with a simple CSS style tag inserted into the template of the site.

It is important to note that while this is simple it only applies to common fonts  supported across standard browsers and platforms, to pull off using custom fonts on any website is much more complicated and with some fonts simply undesirable - if this is something you need it is best to employ a professional - specifically one versed in cross browser compatible font embedding.

Real Estate Blogging While the majority of our clients utilize the Point2 Agent platform to provide themselves with tools including websites, prospect incubation (drip email), lead capture, listing presentation, listings syndication and more, the question of should I use the (semi) integrated blog that Point2 provides or should I focus efforts on an external blog whether it be Wordpress, Blogger or a real estate platform such as Active Rain, and the answer to the question depends upon the time, energy and SEO needs of the individual agents website.

Creating a blog is a great way to constantly add new, relevant SEO content for your website. When deciding on where to create your blog however, you have several options:

SEO for Haiti's ChildrenHello I'm Brian Kinash, CEO of Kinash Digital Media Inc. through our Real Estate Web division Effective Realty Sites we've come up with this contest to help Haiti's disaster relief.

As a father of four the living conditions that many of Haiti's children face has always been something I've found heart wrenching, and now with the mass death and destruction that Haiti has faced following this earthquake I find I have to do something, this contest is what I've come up with, and my team of Designers, Programmers and SEO specialists has stepped up to donate their time along side me, we hope you will step up as well.

Here's the deal, we're going to give away $2000.00 worth or Search Engine Optimization or Custom Design Services for every $2000.00 donated through us.

The math is simple we have more time and talent to give than cold hard cash, so we will put up our services for your cash to be sent to Haitian Relief services via the Canadian Red Cross, we are also researching a few agencies claiming to help the children directly that may become recipients.

Here's how you enter and do your part: visit our site and make a donation there is a link on the home page at www.effectiverealtysites.com

For every $20 entered your name goes into the draw once, one draw will be made for every $2000 donated.

We feel this is a great way for all of us to give to help others, and a great opportunity for you, every entry has a 1 in 100 chance of winning

Larger or more generous offices are welcome to buy your office a win by getting everyone to pitch in and use the winnings to benefit your brokers or office website, the math is simple if you have 100 agents in your office willing to donate $20 your office will receive a $2000 credit towards SEO or Design Services.

Everyone who enters will also receive a coupon code worth 15% off any services purchased through our site and valid for the next 12 months.

We do have a maximum of $10,000 in services up for grabs in service, unfortunately there are only so many additional hours during weekends and evenings for us to give up, however we do hope your donations to Haiti's relief will continue past our ability to give.

Free Real Estate Related Software and Tools

free real estate software realty toolsProductivity Software can be a big expense with programs like MS Office Small Business Edition priced in the  $600.00 neighborhood, Adobe Photoshop standalone at $350.00 or in the Adobe Suites in the $2000.00 neighborhood, yet for the most part we are using the basic functionality of these programs.

Some clever users try to reduce these costs by purchasing academic licenses - however legally they might as well be using a pirated copy than using an academic license for commercial purposes and are effectively wasting their money on such tactics, the reality is that is you need software for commercial purposes buy a commercial license.

Typically I prefer to write my own articles for your edification, but sometimes someone really hits the nail on the head and you just need to expose your audience to it. The following is an article I came across a little while ago that I think applies very well to my target audience.

So how hard is it to ad video to your site, well by now most people are familiar with sites like YouTube, Vimeo etc that will host your videos for free. A chunk of those are familiar with the fact that those videos can be further embedded directly into their website by cutting and pasting a snippit of code but how do you get multiple video players like the one below into your site in a way thats simple and updates itself as you add new videos?

On Site vs. Off Site SEO

I just got off the phone with a Realtor, one who in the past year paid approx. $10,000 to a firm that promised top ranking for 3 prime regional search terms, 12 months later his site is ranked #14 for the least competitive of his targeted keywords and nowhere to be found for the other two, so go figure why he may be sceptical.

Our primary approach and belief is that SEO should always be first approached from an On Site basis, and what we mean by this is that the focus should be on the various elements that comprise the local page, ranging from domain name to site copy, images, code structure internal linking structure and more.

If you have an important point to make, don\'t try to be subtle or clever. Use a pile driver. Hit the point once. Then come back and hit it again. Then hit it a third time-a tremendous whack.
